Saturday 31 January 2015

Such a great day; so many galleries! First Laura, Felix and I went to the Scottish National Gallery to see the Turner exhibition. What I found so interesting was that his water colours are only loaned out in January, because that's when the light levels are at their lowest. As always I was blown away by his paintings. What I love the most about his work is his ability to capture so much drama and emotion, without spelling it out for us in detailed drawing. Looking at his work is like peering into someone's dream; nothing is definite but what you see is beautiful.
Then we had a look around the Fruit Market Gallery which was equally enthralling. There was this one room where the walls were lined with life size photographic portraits of people who all seemed to be starring at you, it was very disconcerting.
And last but not least Laura and I had a quick look in the City Art Centre just before it shut.
All in all a lovely day full of lovely art!

Friday 30 January 2015

Today we started flat hunting! And we've definitely started with a bang, this flat was soo lovely, it's going to be hard to find one to beat it.
Afterwards we went to 99 Hanover Street for drinks with Bea's parents which was fun. And the bar was really cool as well, I would definitely recommend it if you ever find yourself in Edinburgh and in need of a drink.

Thursday 29 January 2015

Last night we went to the SU Ball, and dinner with the lacrosse girls beforehand. And it was such a fab night, although I think I can safely say that everyone was feeling a little worse for wear in the morning.
I don't know what I'd do without these lovely ladies. I am so happy that we are all in Edinburgh together, and this picture makes me happy too.
Love you long time gals x

Wednesday 28 January 2015

Wednesday 28 January 2015

It's been snowing aaaall day. And it's beautiful (and also lethal).
Today has been a fab day! Really chilled and really fun. Spent the arvo with Laura and Charlie talking about all sorts of intellectual things (all over my head) and then watched Les Choristes which is just such a great film, everyone should watch it. Spent this evening with Mil; kept her company whilst she sewed. She said she calls them stitch and bitch sessions, although there was no bitching.. it just sounds fab, who doesn't love a rhyme.

Tuesday 27 January 2015

Tuesday 27 January 2015

I've been waiting for this moment all day.

Monday 26 January 2015

Happy Birthday Phoebe!
I hope you had a cracking day and did lots of fabulous things.
The highlight of the day for me was when we went to the Jazz bar on Chambers street. First time I'd ever been and it certainly won't be the last, it was such fun!
P.S. Phoebs, here's a picture of you in all your special glory x

Sunday 25 January 2015

Sunday 25 January 2015

Pollock this evening. Kind of sums up the weather, and my mood. The come down after such a great weekend. If you're reading this Phil thank you SO MUCH for coming! I had such a fab time.
Now to actually crack on with some work...

Saturday 24 January 2015

Another fab day! After a well needed lie in from the night before, we had brunch and headed straight up Arthur's Seat. It was he perfect day for it too. I wish I took advantage of having it literally right on my doorstep more often, it's fantastic.
This evening I went for Phoebe's birthday dinner and drinks. There were about 30 of us and it was so much fun! So nice to get out of halls and have a fab meal with friends.

Friday 23 January 2015

Having Pip up here has been the best excuse to do everything (other than work).
This morning we went to the National Museum of Scotland, which I've been to before, but I haven't had the chance to really look round like we did today. We say everything and went everywhere, even up to the roof. The view from up there is stunning, there was even a rainbow today arching right over the city. Beautiful. Just like this photo of Philly.
We went to Spoon for lunch. I've been wanting to go there for ages and it's lovely, definitely my favourite little cafe so far, and I've seen a few.

Thursday 22 January 2015

Thursday 22 January 2015

My buddy Philly has come to see me! So so sooooooooo good to see her. She's finished exams and is here to party! I'm so excited to spend the weekend shopping, chatting and having a fab time (there will be a lot of shopping).
Side note, we went to Caravan for lunch today and I'm not usually one for Thai food but it was so yummy. Definitely recommend.

Love ya Phil x

Wednesday 21 January 2015

Wednesday 21 January 2015

Today has been great, if not slightly uneventful. Although I have fed my newly found Game of Thrones addiction quite well.
Another pub night with my chums which was great (different chums, who knew I had friends, and also a different pub for that matter). Although not too keen on the live band who started swearing at us as we left... not our fault they massacred Mumford and Sons.

When in doubt, peace and pout (Sophie's motto for life)

Tuesday 20 January 2015

Tuesday 20 January 2015

Today has been a fab day, it's really true that if you think positively then good things will happen. And the best part of today was definitely my evening out with my corridor girls. In the words of Miranda's mum it really was SUCH FUN, and we also made such a good team at the pub quiz (aside from the fact that we came second last).
The photo for today is not actually form the pub, but of poorly Al and her inspiring supper of chips and a plum. Possibly one of my favourite pictures of all time.

Monday 19 January 2015

Monday 19 January 2015

Today's scenes. It's been one of those productive, if slightly dull days. I've been having quite a stressful time finding an elective for this semester that fits my timetable, isn't full and that I can actually do. Safe to say it's been a lot harder than I first thought. And I have been the email queen today; admin ninja. Fingers crossed it will all sort itself out soon.

Sunday 18 January 2015

Sunday 18 January 2015

This morning I went to such a fab church service at Charlotte's Chapel; definitely worth the half an hour walk there. Even more of a bonus, walking through Edinburgh this morning with blue skies and crisp air was so beautiful. But back to church. It just all seemed so relevant to everything that I've been thinking and wondering about Christianity at the moment. It answered some questions but also sparked a million more. And I'm actually so excited to find out the answers, I envy the conviction they all have about their faith. I want it, so I'm going to find it. At the end of the service we also watched 5 people get baptised, which I found really moving after hearing about how they came to Jesus and the journey they took to get there. It was such an uplifting day!

Saturday 17 January 2015

Saturday 17 January 2015

Everyone is ill! Today I have felt like a nurse tending to all my invalid friends. Get well soon please!
And as well as nursing I also decided to look after myself the best way I know how: with green tea and chocolate, yum.
And gloves because why not, (and also because my tea was hot and the handle is broken).

Friday 16 January 2015

Friday 16 January 2015

In complete contrast to yesterday, the weather today was beautiful, although still bitterly cold. But in a way the freezing temperature actually added to the beauty of it. Arthur's Seat was looking particularly amazing today, set against the completely clear blue sky. The sunshine really brings this city to life and every time makes me realise how lucky I am to be here.

Thursday 15 January 2015

I think one of the most memorable things about today was the wind. It. Was. Mental. Literally strong enough to push you backwards. So that made the cobbled streets around uni extra fun. However, as bizarre as the weather was today, the best part was definitely Lelor and Georgie's party. It was fab and kind of refreshing to socialise with completely different people, and also it was so nice to see the girls, who I don't really see that often anyway.

Thank you Lelor and Georgie!

Thursday 15 January 2015

Wednesday 14 January 2015

Happy Birthday Clorinda!
Here's a picture with an appearance from Wiggle, Collin the Caterpillar's Scottish cousin.

Tuesday 13 January 2015

Tuesday 13 January 2015

The highlight of my day today was tea and biscuits with the lovely Laura, three of my favourite things. It was so nice to just chat about everything and nothing and just generally veg out. I feel like I've been bottling everything up a little recently so it feels good to share it. Bottling stuff up never helps and more often than not ends up making you feel worse so, sharing is caring. And once it's off your chest it's so much easier to move past. So don't bottle it up kids, drink tea and be happy!

Monday 12 January 2015

Well last night was fun! It's so good to be back with friends and just having a great time. The best nights are the ones that just happen without any real plan, and last night was definitely one of them. I have never been in such a nice Spoon's either, it was beautiful (well as beautiful as a Spoon's can be). Ah, just a great night of laughs, dancing aaaaand a few drinks too. And here's a picture of Edward exhibiting all of those things.

Monday 12 January 2015

Sunday 11 January 2015

And I'm back! And in one piece too after a rather bumpy landing. It was a lovely surprise to see so many of my friends on the same flight, it made the journey a lot more bearable. Sometimes I just hate travelling alone. Anyway, just as we had taken off I saw this stunning sunset, the photo doesn't really do it justice. Without sounding overly weird and graphic it kind of looked like the sky had been torn apart and I was starring into something from another world. I love the idea that, because we (humans) know so little about the sky and everything beyond our planet, we can just make it whatever we like and that's quite exciting... and a little scary too.

A little insight into the wonderful world of Grace's mind.

Saturday 10 January 2015

Saturday 10 January 2015

I won't lie I'm a bit sad right now, over a couple of things. Being sad is okay, but it's best not to hold on to it, or it will end up destroying you. I'll admit, a good cry can work wonders, and it can be good to indulge in a bit of sadness and self pity for a bit. But we have to make sure that it is ONLY a bit. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until it sinks in (for anyone reading and also for me), POSITIVITY IS KEY. Once you have that positive outlook on life then life will get better, and opportunities will spring up in places you never imagined. And positivity can stem from the most inconsequential of things, like how beautiful the sky looks on a cold January evening...

Friday 9 January 2015

Friday 9 January 2015

Penultimate night at home. As excited as I am to go back... home is so great. What I'll miss most is probably my bed... and home cooked food, and mum and dad, and no work...
Nah, as much as I'll miss it I'm looking forward to going back to uni and getting really stuck in, working hard, making new friends and seeing all my old ones too! I can't wait to see them all and get back into the swing of things and just be positive. Although one thing I'm definitely not looking forward to is packing, urgh.

On the plus side I baked a lemon drizzle cake today. This is one of Mary Berry's recipe's (with a few alterations) and it's pretty amazing, if I do say so myself.

Scrummy.

Thursday 8 January 2015

Thursday 8 January 2015

My picture for today is not actually a photo from today. It's actually from the summer. But the highlight of my day today was a phone call I had with my friend Victoria. We were at college together last year but since we've both gone off to uni we don't see much of each other, and even worse we don't talk too often either. So it was SO great to catch up with her. You don't get too many in life but she is one of those friends who I know will always be there for me, no matter where we are or how old we get. And even when we're 99 she'll still probably be as big a chatterbox as she is now, or more (if that's possible). I'm so lucky to have friends like Tor. And I'm so lucky to have all the friends I have in my life. Friends are fab. I once heard someone say that friends are the family you choose, and I think that's spot on. I don't know what I'd do without my friends.

FRIENDS

Wednesday 7 January 2015

Wednesday 7 January 2015

My sister went back to school today, and annoying as she can me I'll miss her a LOT. But I'm looking forward to going back to uni now, although I'm sure as soon I'm back in halls with catered food I'll be wishing I was back here.
I've never been huge on new year's resolutions and this whole 'new year, new me' thing, but I'm in need of a new start and I have a good feeling about 2015, so fingers crossed.

Slightly eerie picture of Thea's door and empty room, with an appearance from Bart Simpson too.

Tuesday 6 January 2015

Tuesday 6 January 2015

Ummmmm soo somehow I managed to sleep in till noon today... oops. Not gonna lie though it felt great. Despite the lethargic start though I actually had quite a productive day.
I read somewhere today that you tend to sleep more when you're sad, which kind of makes sense, like you're escaping reality a little more each day just to help you deal a little better. Maybe that's what's been happening to me. BUT! We all have to remember to try and stay positive no matter what. This might sound a little hypocritical seeing as I can sometimes be super negative but I can always rely on myself to remember that life goes on, and as much as it might suck right now (and it really does), it's just going to get better so in order to fully appreciate the getting-better-ness of life, we best all be in a positive mindset :) Part of the idea of this blog is to remind myself (and hopefully anyone reading it?) that each day, no matter how mundane it may be or how low you may feel, something worthwhile will happen, even if it's just a smile.
Although I'm not really one for the selfies, here I am in all my glory. I woke up like this... no really, I did.

SMILE

Monday 5 January 2015

Up to London today! Lovely girly trip with mum and my sister, with shopping and yummy food. And to top it all off we went to see Les Mis at the Queen's Theatre, and it. was. stunning! I couldn't help having a little sing-a-long to myself too. It's just such a great story with such fab songs too. This was the first time I've ever seen it in the theatre before and it really was as good as I'd been told. When I watched the film for the first time I remember being a little bit exhausted by the constant singing, but now I think it's great, although I'm not sure Thea was as enthusiastic. If you haven't seen it yet I definitely recommend it.
Overall it was a top top day, minus the sprint for the train home at Waterloo, that was cutting it a little fine.

Sunday 4 January 2015

Sunday 4 January 2015

Today has been one of those days. The ones that just pass without anything super significant happening. But it wasn't completely uneventful... just quite. The big achievement of today was getting round to posting a letter to my friend Jack. In all its home made glory and with the extra addition of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stamp I think it make quite a beautiful letter. But it also got me thinking...

This December, my crazy friends Jack and Freddie are rowing the Atlantic together in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Aside from being absolutely bonkers they are also raising money for the Brain Research Trust so if you can please please sponsor them, for such an amazing challenge and also such a worthy cause. Their website is http://www.atlanticcastaways.com/

Good luck boys!

Saturday 3 January 2015

Saturday 3 January 2015

I think miserable is a good word to use to sum up today. Been feeling a bit down, the weather is just, well, British, and that post party scrabble to get home asap is never fun. But! Got to stay positive, and I think I've done a pretty good job. Today I went into Chichester with mummy, and despite the drizzle we had a lovely afternoon filled with lunch and shopping. And of course I couldn't go to Chichester and not take a picture of the stunning cathedral, but I think this one illustrates today best (it's okay the cathedral still gets a spot).

Friday 2 January 2015

Today was Aggie's birthday! And to celebrate, my friend Pip had organised a surprise party for her, and it really was a surprise. Pip had been planning it for a few months, and had hatched a plan to get Aggie to her house without letting anything slip. It was quite an operation; all of Aggie's family were in on it, and all the guests were sworn to secrecy... or else. I'd never been to an actual surprise party before and it was great, the look on Aggie's face when she walked through the door, expecting no one and was faced with with our ugly mugs screeching along to Happy Birthday; priceless moment.

Happy birthday Aggie!

Thursday 1 January 2015

Thursday 1 January 2015

Happy New Year! I was at a party last night with a few friends and the subject of new year's resolutions came up. Now, I've never been particularly good at the whole keeping-new-years-resolutions-going-more-than-a-week thing, but then it dawned on me that I could do something useful (and fun) and fingers crossed keep it up right the way through till the 31st of December. Which brings me to, da da da daaaa... my photo of the day blog! The idea being that I will capture a moment or object or place each day which, to me, sums the whole thing up; whether that be reaching the top of Kilimanjaro with my friends or being fascinated by the texture of a carpet... who knows!

So to kick it all off, aside from seeing in 2015 this morning, the highlight and also the saddest moment of my day today was watching the final episode of Miranda. I'm sure this is a sad sad moment for womankind everywhere. There's nothing I love more than sitting down to watch Miranda with my mum and my sister and having a non-stop gigglefest for half an hour. Although today I'm unashamed to say that a tear was definitely shed when Miranda said good bye to 'her friends', and in a way that's what she's become to me really, as I'm sure she's become, in a way to so many people. But fingers crossed she's not gone for good, and will be back on our screens and in our lives soon.
